Overview

What this guide is for

No — Grand Theft Auto VI is made for adults. The ESRB rates it M for Mature 17+ and lists blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong sexual content, strong language and drug and alcohol use, plus in-game purchases. In Europe, the PlayStation Store shows PEGI 18, and Brazil's ClassInd rated it not recommended for under-18s. There is no setting that tones the content down. This guide covers what each rating says, what Rockstar's own footage has shown, the spending to watch for — including a free GTA+ month that renews automatically — and how to block the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S before the November 19 launch.

Is GTA 6 appropriate for kids?

No. Every rating published so far puts GTA VI at the adult end of the scale: M (17+) from the ESRB in North America, 18 from Brazil's ClassInd, and PEGI 18 on European store listings. The mature content is not an optional layer — there is no setting to censor or reduce it.

For a younger child the answer is a clear no. For an older teen it is a judgment call that depends on the teen and on you knowing exactly what is in the game, which is what the rest of this guide is for.

What are GTA 6's official age ratings?

Status as of October 22, 2026:

    • ESRB (United States and Canada): M for Mature 17+. Content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Interactive element: In-Game Purchases. The rating is listed on ESRB.org and on Rockstar's GTA VI page.
    • PEGI (Europe and the UK): the PlayStation Store in Spain shows PEGI 18 with violence, sexual content, drugs and in-game purchases. A detailed PEGI page appeared on pegi.info on October 2 and was removed a day later; it reportedly described dismemberment, cocaine use and sex scenes, but PEGI has not explained the removal, and its database had no GTA VI entry when we checked on October 22.
    • ClassInd (Brazil): 18, not recommended for under-18s, published in Brazil's official gazette on October 9, 2026 (analysis summary no. 598/2026). Descriptors: sexual content, drugs, inappropriate language and violence, plus the interactive element online purchases. The summary names mutilation, gratuitous or glorified violence, and illicit drug trafficking and glorification as the factors that set the rating.

    What content has Rockstar shown?

Rockstar's 26-minute Extended Look, released August 27, 2026, is the longest official look at the game. It is marketing footage, so it shows less than the full game, but it matches the ratings:

Rating descriptors are the better guide to what the full game contains; the footage gives you a sense of its tone. Note that each board rates the material submitted to it — ClassInd's summary, for example, lists 72 minutes of material analyzed.

    • Violence: armed store robberies with masks, firefights around vehicles, close combat and a slow-motion aiming ability that highlights targets.
    • Crime and police: a deal at a stash house that goes wrong, a police raid, high-speed chases, a six-star wanted scale and a getaway car set on fire — see our wanted system guide.
    • Drugs and alcohol: parties and nightlife appear in the footage; drug use itself is confirmed by the ESRB, PEGI and ClassInd descriptors rather than shown in detail.
    • Sex and nudity: the Extended Look does not show explicit scenes, but all three ratings list sexual content, and the ESRB also lists nudity.
    • Language: the ESRB lists Strong Language and ClassInd lists inappropriate language.

What can a child spend money on?

The ESRB and PEGI both flag in-game purchases, and ClassInd lists online purchases. Rockstar has not detailed what can be bought inside GTA VI. None of the published ratings lists gambling as of October 22. The spending you can already see:

    • The game itself: $79.99 for the Standard Edition or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
    • GTA+: eligible pre-orders include a free month of the GTA+ membership, which then renews automatically at $7.99 a month unless cancelled — a recurring charge on the payment method saved to the account. See how to cancel GTA+ auto-renew.
    • Vintage Vice City Pack: a free bonus for orders placed before November 20, 2026, so that deadline is not a reason to rush the decision.
    • Online: GTA VI is single-player at launch, and Rockstar has not announced a date for a new online mode. When one arrives it will bring contact with strangers and new spending, so it is worth revisiting your settings then.

How do I block GTA 6 with parental controls?

Both consoles can stop an age-rated game from launching on a child's account, even when it is installed on a shared console. Set this up on the child's account, not yours — ideally before preload opens on November 12 at local midnight, when pre-ordered digital copies can start downloading (times by region in our preload guide).

    • PS5: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > select the child > Parental Controls. Set the age level for games and apps, add a Monthly Spending Limit and, if needed, restrict Communication and User-Generated Content.
    • Xbox Series X|S: use the Xbox Family Settings app to set content restrictions by age, turn on Ask to Buy so purchases need your approval, and manage screen time and online play.
    • Protect the settings with your own account password or passcode so a child cannot simply switch them off.
    • Physical or digital makes no difference: the boxed edition contains only a download code, no disc (details), and the restriction applies to the child's account, not to how the game was bought.

What if your teen wants it?

Blanket bans can backfire: a teen who can't play at home may play at a friend's. If your teen is asking for GTA VI, an honest conversation usually works better than a rule alone. A few anchor points: the game is satire aimed at adults, not a how-to; the single-player game at launch is a separate question from a future online mode, which would add strangers and spending; and "all my friends have it" is worth checking rather than taking at face value.

If you want to decide before launch, the release date tracker has the key dates and the FAQ answers the most common pre-launch questions.
