GTA 6 Launch Week Checklist: Day-by-Day From Preload to November 19
The dated plan for GTA VI's launch: what to settle before preload on November 12, the refund and bonus deadlines, and what to do on launch night.
Overview
What this guide is for
GTA VI launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and preload opens a week earlier, on November 12, at local midnight. This page is the dated version of launch prep: which decisions have a deadline and what to do on each day. For a tickable list of everything else (display, audio, account security, accessibility), use our interactive launch checklist.
What should you do before GTA 6 launches?
Settle the decisions that have a deadline first, then let the download run. In date order:
- Before November 12: decide whether you're keeping your pre-order. On PlayStation, starting the download can affect a refund. See how to cancel and get a refund.
- Before November 12: free at least 250GB. There's no official size yet; our file size guide explains the estimate and how to make room.
- November 12: preload opens at local midnight. Start it yourself or leave automatic downloads on.
- From November 12: boxed copies reach stores. Redeem the code on the account you play on, since nothing preloads until you do.
- November 18: install any pending system update and check that the preload shows as complete.
- November 19: GTA VI unlocks at local midnight. Let any launch update finish before you start.
- Before November 20: last window to buy and still get the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- After launch: if you redeemed the free GTA+ month, it renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renew.
What should you settle before preload opens?
Three decisions get harder once the download starts.
- Keep or cancel: on PlayStation, refund eligibility can end once the download or preload begins. On Xbox, you cancel from your Microsoft order history, generally until about 10 days before release. Retail orders are cancelled with the retailer.
- Edition: Standard ($79.99) and Ultimate ($99.99) unlock at the same moment, with no early access. The $20 upgrade stays available after launch, so Standard is a safe default. See Standard vs Ultimate.
- Digital or boxed: the box holds a download code, no disc. PS5 codes are region-locked, so buy one for your account's region. More in the physical edition explainer.
How does GTA 6 preload work?
Preload opens on November 12, 2026, at midnight in your store-account region, for digital pre-orders and redeemed boxed codes. Changing the console clock doesn't make it start earlier. Players further east go first: local midnight is 05:00 UTC in New York and 08:00 UTC in Los Angeles.
If you want it to start on its own, keep automatic downloads on and leave the console in rest mode, connected, with the space already free. Otherwise, start it from the game's page in your library.
Preloading doesn't unlock anything early: the game stays locked until local midnight on November 19. Region-by-region unlock times are on our preload and release times page.
How much space and download time should you plan for?
Rockstar hasn't published a file size, and neither store lists one as of October 22. Estimates mostly run from about 150GB to 200GB, so free at least 250GB. At full speed, that download takes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours on 100 Mbps and 13 to 18 hours on 25 Mbps. The full speed list and space-saving tips are in our file size guide.
Rockstar hasn't said anything about a day-one patch or its size either. Leave room for one, and don't plan around any patch figure you see online.
What should you do on launch night?
GTA VI unlocks at local midnight on November 19: that's 00:00 UTC in London, 05:00 UTC in New York and 08:00 UTC in Los Angeles.
- Bonuses: the Vintage Vice City Pack and Ultimate content come with the order, with no separate code. If something is missing, see how to claim pre-order bonuses.
- Online: GTA VI is single-player at launch, so there's no online mode to set up yet. See multiplayer at launch.
- Spoilers: mute GTA VI keywords and hashtags a few days before launch, not on the night.
- First session: decide in advance whether you'll stop after the opening or keep going, and save our beginner guide and early mistakes to avoid for afterwards.
- Everything else (display, audio, controllers, account security, accessibility) is in the interactive launch checklist, which saves your progress in this browser.
