How Big Is GTA 6? Estimated Download Size and How Much Storage to Free Up

Rockstar hasn't published GTA VI's file size yet. The realistic estimate, the leaks to ignore, how much space to clear on PS5 and Xbox, and how long the download takes.

No official GTA VI file size exists as of October 22, 2026; the PlayStation and Microsoft Store listings show none.
Estimates and leaks mostly fall between about 150GB and 200GB on PS5; some unverified claims go above 200GB.
Rockstar hasn't announced a day-one patch or its size, so any patch figure you see is a guess.

Overview

What this guide is for

Rockstar still hasn't published an official file size for Grand Theft Auto VI, and neither the PlayStation Store nor the Microsoft Store lists one as of October 22, 2026. Most estimates and leaks put the download at roughly 150GB to 200GB on PS5, with some claims going higher. With preload opening November 12, the safe move is to free at least 250GB now. Timing is on our preload and release times page, and the interactive launch checklist covers the rest of your setup.

How big is GTA 6?

Officially, nobody knows yet. Rockstar hasn't published an install size, and as of October 22, 2026 neither store lists one: the PlayStation page shows a 7-day pre-load and a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" tag, and the Microsoft Store page shows no size either.

Unofficially, most estimates and leak claims land between about 150GB and 200GB on PS5. The most-shared leak puts the PS5 build just under 200GB; it is unverified. Bigger numbers, such as 244GB or 300GB-plus, come from unverified posts or alleged developer builds, which are not retail copies. Treat all of it as a range, not a spec.

How much storage should you free up for GTA 6?

At least 250GB on the console you'll play on. That covers the top of the estimated range plus room for a launch update. If the official figure comes in lower, you've lost nothing; if it comes in higher, you won't be deleting games on preload night.

    • PS5 and PS5 Pro: the game has to run from the internal SSD or an M.2 SSD expansion. A launch-model PS5 (825GB) has about 667GB usable, so 250GB is over a third of the drive.
    • Xbox Series X: same 250GB target; the 1TB drive has about 802GB usable.
    • Xbox Series S: no separate Series S size has been published. The 512GB model has about 364GB usable, so 250GB means clearing most of it. It's the console most likely to need a Storage Expansion Card.
    • Buying a box doesn't change the math: the physical edition is a download code with no disc, so every copy installs the full game.

How do you make room without losing games?

Move games instead of deleting them where you can. Copying a game back from a USB drive is usually faster than downloading it again and doesn't count against a data cap.

    • PS5: you can move PS5 games to a USB drive (SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster, 250GB minimum), but you can't play them from there; copy them back first. PS4 games can run straight from USB.
    • Xbox Series X|S: games optimized for Series X|S run only from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can still hold them for a quicker re-copy later.
    • Both: delete old video captures, and confirm your saves are backed up (PS Plus cloud storage on PS5, cloud saves on Xbox) before uninstalling anything.
    • For supported platforms and setup, see system requirements; for which console handles GTA VI best, see best console for GTA 6.

How long will the GTA 6 download take?

It depends on your connection and the final size. The times below are estimates for a 150GB to 200GB download running at your plan's full speed. Wi-Fi, other devices on the network and launch-week server load can all make it slower, which is why preloading from November 12 matters.

Quick formula: hours ≈ size in GB × 2.2 ÷ speed in Mbps. At 100 Mbps, each gigabyte takes about 80 seconds.

    • 10 Mbps: about 33 to 44 hours.
    • 25 Mbps: about 13 to 18 hours.
    • 50 Mbps: about 7 to 9 hours.
    • 100 Mbps: about 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
    • 300 Mbps: about 1 to 1.5 hours.
    • 500 Mbps: about 40 to 55 minutes.
    • 1 Gbps: about 20 to 30 minutes.

Will there be a day-one patch, and how big?

Rockstar hasn't said whether GTA VI will get a day-one patch or how big it would be. Patch sizes quoted online, from a few gigabytes to 50GB, don't come from Rockstar. The 250GB target already leaves room for an update, and preloading early means whatever arrives at launch is a far smaller download than the game itself.

      Is the 676.7GB listing real?

No. The 676.7GB figure went viral in December 2025 and resurfaced when pre-orders opened in June 2026, but it has no official source. It wouldn't even fit on a 512GB Xbox Series S, one of GTA VI's own platforms. Treat any 500GB-plus claim the same way.

When will Rockstar publish the official size?

Rockstar hasn't given a date. Expect it on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings, and at the latest when preload opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, since the download itself will show it. We'll replace the estimates here with the official number as soon as it's out. Unlock times by region are on our preload and release times page.

One caution: on PlayStation, starting the download can affect your refund eligibility. If you're unsure about keeping your pre-order, settle that first with our cancel and refund guide. The rest of launch prep is in the interactive launch checklist.
