How Long Is GTA 6? What Rockstar Has Said About Story Length
How long is GTA 6's story? Rockstar has no official main-story length. A Rockstar North studio head's own run took about 80 hours with some optional goals; the 75-hour figure is still a rumor.
Overview
What this guide is for
There is no official length for GTA VI's main story. The closest thing to an on-the-record number came on August 27, 2026, when Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times that his own playthrough, finished in February, took about 80 hours — and that run included some optional goals, not just the main missions. The 75-hour and 45-50 hour figures that circulated earlier are still unconfirmed leaks. Below: what the 80 hours does and doesn't tell you, what the Extended Look showed about how the campaign is built, and how GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 compare. Planning launch week? Start with the beginner guide and the release date tracker.
How long is GTA 6's story?
Rockstar has not published a main-story length, so nobody outside the studio can give you an exact number yet. The only first-party data point comes from Rob Nelson: the Rockstar North co-studio head told The New York Times that his own run through the game, completed in February 2026, took about 80 hours. By his description, that run covered the campaign plus "some optional goals with narrative ramifications" — so it is neither a main-missions-only time nor a 100% completion time.
In practice: if you follow the story and take on some of what the world offers along the way, one Rockstar developer's experience points to a long game. A story-only run would likely be shorter, but there is no confirmed figure for how much shorter.
What does the 80-hour figure actually mean?
It is one person's playthrough of a pre-release build, completed nine months before launch. It is not an average across many players, and the final game can still change.
Some headlines turned it into "Rockstar confirms an 80-hour story." That overstates it: the figure mixes the campaign with optional content, and Rockstar has not issued a main-story runtime. Nelson's broader point, as reported, was that he hopes players slow down and spend time in the world between missions instead of rushing to the ending.
What about the 75-hour rumor?
The 75-hour claim — a 2-hour prologue followed by five chapters — traces back to a single anonymous post on X in August 2025, with no named source and no track record. Outlets that repeated it did so with explicit caveats.
The lower 45-50 hour estimate ("shorter than Red Dead 2") came from LegacyKillaHD, a leaker with a longer Rockstar track record, first posted in September 2024. Nelson's 80-hour run does not settle either claim, because it includes optional content. Both remain leaks, not official numbers.
How does that compare with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2?
Average completion times for Rockstar's last two open-world games give a rough frame, not a prediction:
- GTA V: about 32 hours for the main story.
- Red Dead Redemption 2: about 50 hours for the main story, and more than 80 with the main story plus extras.
- GTA VI: no official figure; one Rockstar North developer's run, with some optional goals, took about 80 hours.
What did the Extended Look show about the campaign?
Rockstar's 26-minute Extended Look, released August 27, 2026, did not give a runtime, but it showed how the story plays. Jason and Lucia share one campaign: missions can put them together or on separate routes, control can switch between them mid-sequence, and the partner you are not controlling keeps driving or shooting. Robberies split the roles, with one holding up a location while the other waits as the driver.
That is a tighter structure than GTA V's three parallel lives, though on its own it says nothing definite about length. Rockstar did not announce campaign co-op; switching is single-player control with an AI partner. Details are in our character switching guide.
How much is there to do outside the story?
The Extended Look's activities montage shows gym exercise, fishing, kayaking, street racing and parachuting, several of them with on-screen interface that points to playable activities. Rockstar also told Dazed that exercise can affect a character's muscle. Our activities list separates what is clearly playable from what only appears in the background.
Leonida is built as a state with several regions, from Vice City to the wetlands, rather than a single city — see the GTA 6 map. You will still see claims that it is "2.5 times" GTA V's map; that multiplier comes from fan mapping of trailer footage, not from Rockstar.
When will there be a real answer?
After the November 19, 2026 launch, completion times from real players will replace estimates within weeks. Until then, treat any precise main-story number as someone's estimate; we will update this guide when Rockstar or verified post-launch data gives a clearer figure. Meanwhile, these launch facts are confirmed:
- Preload for digital copies starts November 12 at local midnight — see preload and release times.
- Boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc — details in our physical edition guide.
- Orders placed before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- At launch GTA VI is single-player; Rockstar has not announced a date for a new online mode.
