Overview

Why this update matters

Rockstar announced An Extended Look at Grand Theft Auto VI on August 6, dated for August 27 and premiering on Netflix. The announcement raised more questions than it answered, so here are the direct ones: it is not called Trailer 3, you do not need a Netflix subscription to watch it, and the start time depends on which platform you use. Our full news coverage is in the gameplay reveal article.

Is An Extended Look the same as GTA 6 Trailer 3?

No. Rockstar has not used the name Trailer 3 for this showcase, not on its announcement page and not in the announcement video. It is called An Extended Look, and the wording looks deliberate rather than accidental.

The two formats do different jobs. A numbered trailer is a short, cut-to-music story piece — that is what Trailer 2 was. An extended look is the language Rockstar and its peers use for a longer presentation with gameplay in it. If you have been waiting specifically for a Trailer 3, this is probably not it, and it may well be something bigger. Every official video so far is on our trailers hub.

What time does the GTA 6 Extended Look start?

Rockstar's page gives one time: August 27 at 3 PM ET, on Netflix. Reporting adds a second slot on YouTube and the official Grand Theft Auto VI site six hours later. Converted:

  • Netflix premiere, August 27 — 3 PM New York, 1 PM Mexico City, 2 PM Bogota, 4 PM Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, 8 PM Lisbon, 9 PM Madrid.
  • YouTube and rockstargames.com, six hours later — 9 PM New York, 7 PM Mexico City, 8 PM Bogota, 10 PM Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, and already August 28 in Europe: 2 AM Lisbon, 3 AM Madrid.
  • Rockstar has confirmed only the Netflix time on its own site; the second slot comes from press reporting.

Do you need a Netflix subscription to watch GTA 6's Extended Look?

No. Netflix gets it first, not exclusively. Video Games Chronicle and other outlets covering the announcement report that the showcase goes up on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official site the same day, six hours after the Netflix premiere.

Worth being precise about the sourcing: Rockstar's own announcement page currently lists only the Netflix time and points its Remind Me button at netflix.com/GTAVI. The second time comes from press reporting rather than from a Rockstar surface, so treat it as well-sourced but not officially posted.

Why is Rockstar putting GTA 6 on Netflix?

Rockstar has not explained the arrangement, and nothing in the announcement describes it as a partnership, an exclusive, or part of a wider deal. What is visible is narrow and factual: Netflix lists An Extended Look as a title on its service, and Rockstar's page sends its reminder button there.

Beyond that, anything about why is guesswork. Netflix has been expanding into games and has carried other game-adjacent releases, and a streaming premiere puts the showcase in front of an audience that does not follow game trailers. Neither company has said that is the reasoning, and we are not going to present it as though they had.

What will the Extended Look actually show?

Rockstar has not said, and has not given a runtime. The name points toward a longer presentation than a trailer, which historically is where Rockstar shows systems: how switching between Jason and Lucia works, how heists are structured, how police response behaves, and how much of Leonida you can move through.

The honest position is that the format is inferred from the title and from precedent, not confirmed. We will update this article once it airs. For confirmed launch information, follow the release-date tracker.
